Chemistry – Research Scientist / Sr Scientist

ActivX Biosciences seeks a talented, motivated Organic Chemist to join our fast-paced drug discovery team. The researcher will be involved in lead optimization and hit-to-lead projects, with an emphasis on small-molecule synthesis to support our pre-clinical R&D. Together, we will make new medicines for patients worldwide.

ActivX is in the Torrey Pines Science Park area on the Torrey Pines mesa in La Jolla, California. Research at ActivX is focused on drug discovery in the therapeutic areas of viral infection, inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Our proprietary KiNativ™ technology, used extensively internally, is provided on a fee-for-service basis to most other major pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The technology allows identification and development of highly selective drugs, significantly lowering development risks.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out viable synthetic strategies to efficiently obtain compounds for pre-clinical R&D
  • Conduct multi-step syntheses, state-of-the-art purifications, and compound spectroscopic characterization
  • Analyze project data to actively participate in chemistry and multidisciplinary project meetings
  • Create relevant intellectual property to contribute to patent inventorship
  • Communicate and present results to project team clearly and with high degree of accuracy
  • Keep up-to-date with the literature
  • May synthesize, purify, and characterize active site probes to support ActivX’s technology platforms
  • Maintain electronic notebook entries and inventory records in accordance with ActivX’s policies

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with 2-10 years of industrial and/or postdoctoral hands-on experience in synthetic organic chemistry. Experience in small molecule drug discovery is a plus
  • Skilled in the art of organic synthesis and familiar with modern synthetic and purification methods
  • Proficiency with analytical techniques including LC-MS, NMR, UV, TLC,and IR spectroscopy
  • Excellent multitasking skills
  • Critical thinking and strong problem solving skills
  • Scientifc curiosity and creativity
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Track record of accomplishments in synthetic organic chemistry
